Emergency workers and researchers use the term “critical incident” to describe a traumatic event. I’ve been compelled to explore mental health issues — and their potential solutions — ever since. Research has found that throughout a career, an emergency worker may experience over 180 critical incidents. While observing emergency workers in this documentary, I was amazed by their ability to work so calmly through crises and transition quickly in and out of their home lives. I wrote previously that the American West has some of the nation’s worst outcomes for behavioral health issues such as substance abuse and suicide.

The rapper is part of a new public service announcement with Seize the Awkward, a national campaign encouraging young people to talk to their friends about mental health. “I’ve always been told I’ve gotta be strong,” Megan Thee Stallion, whose offstage name is Megan Pete, said in a video for the campaign. “The truth is that people have wildly different experiences depending on their identities, and types of sociopolitical oppression they go through.”That Megan Thee Stallion is speaking about mental health publicly “is forcing the conversation to go mainstream,” he added.

When Mark Capps, 54, fell asleep several hours later, and Acuff and her mother Tara Capps, Mark Capps' wife, were able to leave the house and file a police report. Police later shot and killed Mark Capps when he pointed a gun at an officer after they tried to arrest him at his home. She researches the brains of people who died by suicide to identify biomarkers. Identifying biomarkers of suicide in the human brainKulviwat found differences in the brains of 10 people who died by suicide compared to the control group: 10 people who died of other causes. The brains of those who died by suicide, which were donated for study by their next of kin, contained higher numbers of inflammatory cytokines. Though treatments for suicidal behavior exist, including psychotherapy and medications, suicide rates have mostly increased over the last 20 years. Hearing different perspectives and questioning why suicide research isn't progressing as much as other fields — like cancer or infectious diseases — inspired her research, she said.

Maya spent nearly a decade writing "Sushi Tuesdays," which aims to humanize the face of suicide. Post Hill PressShe spent nearly a decade writing “Sushi Tuesdays,” beginning with a blog by the same name, an homage to the weekly ritual she created after her husband’s death. When Sam Maya died, Tasheff was a single mother living on a budget in Brooklyn and couldn’t travel to California to visit.
